Davao Philippines’Cavendish Bananas is known deliciously sweet.

  • Philippine is now the 2nd Largest Exporter of Bananas in the world.
  • The majority of these shipments are destined for the growing regional markets of China, the Middle East and, to a lesser extent, Russia to satisfy their demand for fresh produce
  • Exports of Philippine bananas for the last quarter of this year are expected to rise following China’s lifting of restrictions on Philippine exports early this month.
  • Below are the 15 countries that accounted for the highest dollar value worth of bananas exported from the Philippines during 2015:
  1. Japan: US$176.9 million (40.2% of total bananas imports)
  2. China: $109.2 million (24.8%)
  3. South Korea: $51.6 million (11.7%)
  4. Iran: $33.8 million (7.7%)
  5. United Arab Emirates: $19.2 million (4.4%)
  6. Saudi Arabia: $12.9 million (2.9%)
  7. Kuwait: $8.7 million (2%)
  8. New Zealand: $6.5 million (1.5%)
  9. Hong Kong: $5.2 million (1.2%)
  10. Singapore: $5.1 million (1.2%)
  11. Malaysia: $2.3 million (0.5%)
  12. Taiwan: $2.1 million (0.5%)
  13. North Korea: $1.7 million (0.4%)
  14. Bahrain: $1.1 million (0.2%)
  15. Qatar: $912,000 (0.2%)
  • Among the above countries, the fastest-growing consumers of Philippine bananas exports since 2011 were: Bahrain (up 822.2% in value), Saudi Arabia (up 638.1%), Malaysia (up 312.3%) and Kuwait (up 195.4%).Production system ranges from backyard to highly integrated operation with the latter catering to the export market.
  • Weak demand in the EU.
  • Total import of fruit by the Philippines from 2008 till 2013. The highest volume of imports occurred in 2012 reaching 240,477MT while the lowest was in 2008 to 187,265MT. The average annual growth rate was 3.68% during this time period.
  • Philippine farms produced a total of 8.65m tonnes of bananas valued at P117.15bn ($2.6bn) in 2013, down from a peak of 9.23m tonnes worth P108.13bn ($2.4bn) the previous year, according to PSA data. Concerted efforts over the past two decades to expand banana production have led to the commodity becoming the country’s most valuable crop as well as its most profitable agricultural export.
  • The past years, the yield dramatically been reduced due to destruction brought about by the strong typhoons that hit the country particularly the major producing areas in Mindanao. Another calamity was the most recent “El Nino.”  Nevertheless, these are not typical and Mindanao is not a typhoon belt.
  • Overall, the average annual growth rate was 0.26% and 16%, respectively for production and area for the six-year time period.
  • The farms are generally small in size (1-5 ha) with minimal care resulting to low yield.
  • Big farms are typically managed by Cooperatives, Organizations and Investment Companies

We Care for Cancer Patients

am formulating a Feasibility Study for a client but I stopped for a while to give way to an idea of establishing a Cancer Support Group.   I have to admit that I am starting from scratch as I have nothing except a vision and care.  The idea started when my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer early this year.   Since then, I began to incubate care for the cancer patients as I found out how hard it is for them to go through that stage due to so many factors affecting them:

  • Required treatment and medications
  • Physical and emotional stress
  • Mental drain
  • Physical limitations
  • Complete diet shift from cooked to raw vegetables
  • Financial
  • Other factors

We are fortunate to find a Christian Church that truly cares.  Aside from prayers, my wife recently received financial donation in support of her medications and diet.  Although I am already in support of various ministries, the Pastor’s wife brought to our attention how she is burdened with the growing number of ill members’ medical and care needs, which concerns me a lot. I told her, “why not establish a care ministry for cancer patients?”  I smiled after that but the idea did not leave my mind till to this day.  I hope somebody out there would help and support this endeavor… we wish to help organize and find support for Cancer Care Group, who will not just pray but also raise funds for the benefit of cancer patients in and outside of the four walls of our church.  We are in Tagaytay Philippines and we need both an advise and support in any form.

Allow me to thank Optimox Corporation (manufacturer of “Iodoral” – cancer medicine/supplement) as they donated 12 bottles in support of my wife.  I also would like to thank  Breast Cancer Choices (non-profit organization) who donated 2 bottles of Iodoral. Out of those blessings we received, we shared a number of bottles to other breast cancer patients attending the same church we attend (International Christian Fellowship of Tagaytay). The countless blessings also comes from family and friends who supported us in any kind.  I know that God will bless them a hundred fold in His right time.

In the near future, my wife and I would like to ask the church board to allow separate Sunday School gathering for cancer patients and those will ailment.  I am also thinking of sponsoring other projects and programs as awareness seminar-workshop, livelihood, fund raising, art exhibit and partnering with Non Governmental Organization or other Local and International Cancer Care Group.

In this modern times, a cancer patient should not lose hope because there are number of options that provides treatment or cure whether it’s conventional/traditional or alternative/natural treatment and medicines.  We both accept medicines and sponsorship donations for either of the two.

Others:

Above is a juicer highly recommended for cancer patient as natural juice from fruits and vegetable is far greater than almost all food intake.   Another effective therapy is the coffee enema (please see and ask your Doctor about it).

Cancer Treatment through Alternative Medication and Healthy Diet

For more information on this matter, kindly visit your doctor and professional counselor who is credible to give advises on this matter.

If in any case you are in support of Cancer Treatment/Prevention, I am willing to be your channel in the Philippines to help patients who are unfortunate and cannot afford the high cost of the treatment and medicines/vitamins/therapy.  I my self has a wife who is undergoing treatment.  I can both be utilized to reached both those who are undergoing conventional cancer treatment or the modern alternative wellness medication.

Thank you very much.

Philippines Can Fight Hunger with Bananas

I am in the business of Cavendish Bananas trade and export of and other fruits, including rice and other commodities.  Since I already mention in my past blog the opportunities in this business, there is still this I call the other side of the coin.  Allow me now to flip the coin by letting me ask you a question.  If importers only prefers Class A 456 hands and the other good part, what do you think happen to the left over bananas?  Image is excerpt from google images

Fyi. Class A (whether 456 hands or 789 hands) or Class B or Cluster are the categories and specifications of offered bananas in the commodity trading world.  Same with same specs but with defects of any sort (e.g. spots, blemish, etc.) Below are the actual photos of harvested bananas from farms in the Philippines.  This type of banana is undoubtedly bigger than common bananas we see in the market.   Nonetheless, you can see for yourself that not all are the same in sizes so every part are categorized and classified according to specification.. Farmers harvest most age of banana fruit between 9-11 days so it will prolong its freshness until it reaches the country of destination up to the stores and markets that sells them.  Majority of our importer-buyers are from Middle East, mostly from Iran.  Sad to say, only a few are shipped to Manila and known markets in the Philippines as only a few could afford them compared to latundan and lakatan variety.

Let me repeat my question…. “If importers only prefers Class A 456 hands and the other good part, what do you think happen to the left over bananas?”  I will show you where the left are over are going…

Sadly, the not chosen ones are just thrown as garbage or farmers just gave them to the pigs or used as fertilizers.  The first time I saw, I immediately thought of the poor families and street children in Manila and many provinces of the Philippines.  I always say to myself, if I could just be given support by the government or by United Nations or any willing NGO, I will help ask of these bananas to be given to DSWD and other concerned NGO, for their distribution to many agencies facilitating feeding program.  I believe the churches can also participate in both pick and distribution.  Below is the requirement to this task:

  • Government laws or intervention to legalize pick and formalize farmers-government cooperation
  • Ready supply of boxes and other packing materials (to withstand transport)
  • Military assistance from driver, crew from pick-up to transport from farm to loading port
  • Free use of 20ft or 40ft container cube
  • Government facilitated shipping or government ship to transport the containers with bananas and other fruits from Sasa Davao port to Manila or to other port of destination within the Philippines
  • DSWD and LGU cooperation
  • Cooperation of Churches and other NGO
  • Others (depending on the scope of requirement)

These are just for the bananas and fruits from Mindanao.  The government can also coordinate and cooperate with traders of vegetables in Baguio, rice and corn producers, etc.

Come to think of it.
