Size does matter in Cavendish Bananas

Davao Philippines’Cavendish Bananas is known deliciously sweet.

  • Philippine is now the 2nd Largest Exporter of Bananas in the world.
  • The majority of these shipments are destined for the growing regional markets of China, the Middle East and, to a lesser extent, Russia to satisfy their demand for fresh produce
  • Exports of Philippine bananas for the last quarter of this year are expected to rise following China’s lifting of restrictions on Philippine exports early this month.
  • Below are the 15 countries that accounted for the highest dollar value worth of bananas exported from the Philippines during 2015:
  1. Japan: US$176.9 million (40.2% of total bananas imports)
  2. China: $109.2 million (24.8%)
  3. South Korea: $51.6 million (11.7%)
  4. Iran: $33.8 million (7.7%)
  5. United Arab Emirates: $19.2 million (4.4%)
  6. Saudi Arabia: $12.9 million (2.9%)
  7. Kuwait: $8.7 million (2%)
  8. New Zealand: $6.5 million (1.5%)
  9. Hong Kong: $5.2 million (1.2%)
  10. Singapore: $5.1 million (1.2%)
  11. Malaysia: $2.3 million (0.5%)
  12. Taiwan: $2.1 million (0.5%)
  13. North Korea: $1.7 million (0.4%)
  14. Bahrain: $1.1 million (0.2%)
  15. Qatar: $912,000 (0.2%)
  • Among the above countries, the fastest-growing consumers of Philippine bananas exports since 2011 were: Bahrain (up 822.2% in value), Saudi Arabia (up 638.1%), Malaysia (up 312.3%) and Kuwait (up 195.4%).Production system ranges from backyard to highly integrated operation with the latter catering to the export market.
  • Weak demand in the EU.
  • Total import of fruit by the Philippines from 2008 till 2013. The highest volume of imports occurred in 2012 reaching 240,477MT while the lowest was in 2008 to 187,265MT. The average annual growth rate was 3.68% during this time period.
  • Philippine farms produced a total of 8.65m tonnes of bananas valued at P117.15bn ($2.6bn) in 2013, down from a peak of 9.23m tonnes worth P108.13bn ($2.4bn) the previous year, according to PSA data. Concerted efforts over the past two decades to expand banana production have led to the commodity becoming the country’s most valuable crop as well as its most profitable agricultural export.
  • The past years, the yield dramatically been reduced due to destruction brought about by the strong typhoons that hit the country particularly the major producing areas in Mindanao. Another calamity was the most recent “El Nino.”  Nevertheless, these are not typical and Mindanao is not a typhoon belt.
  • Overall, the average annual growth rate was 0.26% and 16%, respectively for production and area for the six-year time period.
  • The farms are generally small in size (1-5 ha) with minimal care resulting to low yield.
  • Big farms are typically managed by Cooperatives, Organizations and Investment Companies

email me at if you want the downloadable materials for free.

Sunday School/VBS Materials.

In my years of handling Children’s Church and Supporting Vacation Bible School, I was able to make a practical manual fit for Filipino kids and friendly-reproducible so that those who are in poor areas could use them as well without spending too much.  The lessons and instruction I wrote were simple and highly motivational.

Below design is a my idea of collaborating Biblical lessons, Nationalism, Motivation and Filipino Values.  The illustration is partly excerpt from a particular illustrated Bible for children redesign with known Philippine symbol.  The design is subject to revision if a publisher or grantor will publish my works.  I intend to make a series of this, though these were already been in use by In Christ We Live Family Christian Center Philippines for three years already.  Other lessons with same format was also been used for more than 10 years already before this.

Above manual is in Tagalog langauge/dialect.

Available in two levels only to fit to limited budget of a local church in poor communities or rural areas.    The levels are ages 9-12yrs old which I called “Big Kids” (combined Middlers and Juniors

Above manual is in English langauge.

Available in two levels only to fit to limited budget of a local church in poor communities or rural areas.    The levels are ages 8 yrs below (not lower than 4yrs old) which I called “Small Kids” (combined Preschool and Primary.

I could provide the complete manuals with activities and graduation template with a donation to interested workers of a Church.  If you are from a well budgeted church, I appreciate it more if you can provide donation for me to continually do my support to less fortunate Christian Churches.

Safari at SM City is a Big Hit

Something light for now.

I grew up in Quezon City Philippines and I could not deny how things have changed for the better in this place since my childhood days.  Due to humid climate, I mostly do my daily trades and sites/blog posting recenly at SM City Mall North EDSA and Trinoma (both in Quezon City).  Last holy week season, I admire SM City’s effort to promote non-traditional Biblical themes — “Noah’s Ark with life size moving animal stuff.  Recently, they again bark on the same animal style stuff.  It’s just  that this time they incorporate the animal stuff in an African theme named, “SAFARI.”  I noticed that people of all ages flocked and the kids loved it.  Even teens and young adults enjoy showing of animal stuff and many took their pictures.  The exhibit was showcased at SM City North EDSA “Sky Garden.”  Better to show the photos I took my self so viewers of my blog will relate…

Lent for Dummies

Lent is an annual religious tradition within Roman Catholic religion.  It is described as the period of liturgical year starting from Ash Wednesday to end of Holy Week, which is Resurrection Sunday (or Easter as many are calling it).

As per records, the purpose is to prepare the believers through prayer, penitence, alms giving and self denial in remembrance of the passion of Christ until His death and resurrection.  Historically, the practice was largely observed until the Protestant Reformation in the time of Martin Luther (a former Catholic Bishop).

Many modern Protestant denominations these days observed the Lent in a refined and simplified manner.  Their teaching foundation is somehow different as they directly read the Bible for the story (mostly quoting from the four Gospel: Matthey, Mark, Luke and John).   Their observance has its  difference as its purpose is focus on remembrance to Christ sacrifices for the salvation of mankind, without inflicting pain or sacrifice on ones self (or penitence).  As they say, “salvation is a free gift from God when you sincerely accept Him as your personal Lord and Savior.  Salvation is by God’s grace through our faith, not gain through good works or sacrifices.”  This they believed from (John 3:16), “ For God so loved the world (or you), that He gave his only begoten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

Lent was also traditionally the term used to describe the period leading up to Christmas before the Advent officially recognized.  As there are differences in the observance within Catholic religion, there are also differences in many aspects in different countries.

The title of the painting is “Forgiven” by Thomas Blackshear.  Excerpt from Google Images.

To better understand the Lent is to view the movie “Passion of Christ” by acclaimed Direct, Mel Gibson.  To me, this movie is the most honest Jesus movie ever made.

Vacation Bible School 2010

I am an in support of Daily Vacation Bible School within selected areas in the Philippines since 1991.  I personally oversee the Children’s Church and Sunday School in years.  The kids that I used to minister now continue what I have started.   My styles are quite effective because I personally produced the manuals and materials based on Philippine culture.  I was able to utilize my skills in design and my background in Advertising.  Since then, lives have been change and the communities benefited.  For proof, please view the link below…

If you can support, please be our sponsor as we need the materials to be printed out (minimal costings only), including promotional items and added accessories needed.  We also need school supplies, tents, budget for food and transportation, and other necessities.  These we need to reach many places and many kids for Christ.  We are fortunate to have volunteer workers. Nonetheless, we need to provide them support as most of the places we send them are poor communities.

For your assurance that your money and support will reach the right people, you can either choose to print the materials yourself (through your contact printing press).  You can just send the output via express delivery on or before April 2010.  Or you can allow us to look for local printing press (they will e-mail you directly the quotation).  Or if you want, I can also provide the Church Address and Contact person to whom you can send your donation via Bank to Bank (T/T) or Western Money Union.  The in-charge will give you receipt.  I won’t handle the money or donations, but I will be the one who will provide the designs.

Concept Designs are available upon request.  Image shown is not the actual but somehow related.

You can e-mail me directly at for inquiries and remarks.  You can also view some of the church history at

Lesson Unplanned by Crystal Defanti

You may have heard it already.  I actually think more than twice if I will post this story or not… I did!

I am pretty much sure this story will be blown into proportion and it will sell like hot cakes in the internet.   I care for the kids but I also thought of Crystal as she was also a victim.  Both have to face the consequences of trauma.  It’s just that the kids will outgrow it and Crystal will have to live with it for the rest of her life.  Nonetheless, “Life goes on!”

photo excerpt from google images

This is the kind of lesson we barely get from classrooms nor on churches, yet it is real and it also happened to some people out there.  But this time, the lesson is not for children but for teacher’s to learn.  We were mostly taught how to do things except how to face a failure.  The teacher must also learn like anybody else.

This does not only happen to Crystal.  We all have our share of shame and scandalous action, hope the parents and the community will forgive.   The shame and agony are more than enough punishment for Crystal.

“Let those who are clean cast the first stone.”
