  • The majority of these shipments are destined for the growing regional markets of China, the Middle East and, to a lesser extent, Russia to satisfy their demand for fresh produce
  • Exports of Philippine bananas for the last quarter of this year are expected to rise following China’s lifting of restrictions on Philippine exports early this month.
  • Below are the 15 countries that accounted for the highest dollar value worth of bananas exported from the Philippines during 2015:
  1. Japan: US$176.9 million (40.2% of total bananas imports)
  2. China: $109.2 million (24.8%)
  3. South Korea: $51.6 million (11.7%)
  4. Iran: $33.8 million (7.7%)
  5. United Arab Emirates: $19.2 million (4.4%)
  6. Saudi Arabia: $12.9 million (2.9%)
  7. Kuwait: $8.7 million (2%)
  8. New Zealand: $6.5 million (1.5%)

  • Weak demand in the EU.
  • Total import of fruit by the Philippines from 2008 till 2013. The highest volume of imports occurred in 2012 reaching 240,477MT while the lowest was in 2008 to 187,265MT. The average annual growth rate was 3.68% during this time period.
  • Philippine farms produced a total of 8.65m tonnes of bananas valued at P117.15bn ($2.6bn) in 2013, down from a peak of 9.23m tonnes worth P108.13bn ($2.4bn) the previous year, according to PSA data. Concerted efforts over the past two decades to expand banana production have led to the commodity becoming the country’s most valuable crop as well as its most profitable agricultural export.
  • The past years, the yield dramatically been reduced due to destruction brought about by the strong typhoons that hit the country particularly the major producing areas in Mindanao. Another calamity was the most recent “El Nino.”  Nevertheless, these are not typical and Mindanao is not a typhoon belt.
  • Overall, the average annual growth rate was 0.26% and 16%, respectively for production and area for the six-year time period.
  • The farms are generally small in size (1-5 ha) with minimal care resulting to low yield.
  • Big farms are typically managed by Cooperatives, Organizations and Investment Companies

THE VALUE OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

One fine day in a particular area in USA in the late 60s, there was an ordinary Sunday School teacher who resigned because she thought nothing is happening.  The kids were still noisy and inattentive in spite of her weekly effort.   Unknowingly, a number of young American soldiers were ambushed in Vietnam.   Many died instantly.

The wounded were brought to the camp for treatment.   As they were too many, the attending Doctors can only attend to one patient at a time.  But one young soldier called the attention of one of the Doctor.  That young man is dying yet he wasable to ask the Doctor to whisper his last words.  The young man said, “Please write to my former Sunday School teacher in America.  Please tell her thank you very much because one Sunday when I am still a kid, she led us in a prayer of acceptance that I accept Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and savior.  Now by faith, I believe that I am saved. Tell her that now I am going to heaven. Also tell her that I will wait for her in heaven to thank her there myself.” After that, the young soldier died.

Few days later, the doorbell rang on the residence of that old Sunday School teacher.  As she read the name of the sender, she could not believe she will receive a letter from Vietnam.  But as she read the letter, her tears began to flow and couldn’t help but cry.   From that day on, she decided to teach children again through Sunday School and actively participated in other Children’s Church activities.

The story was excerpted from one of the back issues of one known Christian booklet publication.

As to Vacation Bible School (VBS), it will only be for a few hours per day, in just five to six days.  If you think that teaching kids through VBS is easy, think again!  This is no ordinary school or summer activity as it is not simple as it looks.  This period is crucial to both attending children and volunteer teachers and workers. To those who have experienced it, the values and motivation kids learned from VBS will be their stepping stone to a clearer view of Christian life and pathway direction they will choose to go through in their life time.  Such activity will be very inspiring if the organizers and teachers will come-up with enjoyable and effective VBS.  As a result, this will strengthen their belief in God and will gain self confidence as they perform a task or goal or service to God through the Christian church they belong.  Many of them will grow to be a blessing to their family, churches, community because a teacher has stepped-up to share God’s love to them.   Same thing applies to Sunday School teachers.

If you are in anyway serve God through the Children’s Church, never feel that your efforts are not getting anywhere because Jesus appreciate everything you do for him.  One day, you will also be surprise as many will thank you in Heaven.

We are giving away a free VBS materials (downloadable).  It’s just that the language is still limited to Filipino (tagalog) at the moment.  If any publisher or fund grantee is willing to support, we are willing to collaborate as my original materials is being requested not just in the Philippines but also in other countries as in Hawaii and Zambia.  You can e-mail us at denissalvatierra@yahoo.com for details.

I salute the Sunday School and VBS teachers!

Elvis Presley sang Amazing Grace

An Actor-Singer, Elvis Presley have been regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth-century popular culture.   I won’t go into details but one side of his life I will touch.

I admire Elvis humble recognition of how he started and where where he got his first inspiration.  Although he lived a controversial and questionable Christian life, I will still recognized his brave showing of his faith like Samson.  Others may not agree on me but let me still recognized him through his videos via youtube.

Elvis Presley’s earliest musical influence came from Gospel music. His mother recalled that from the age of two, at the Assembly of God church in Tupelo attended by the family, “he would slide down off my lap, run into the aisle and scramble up to the platform. There he would stand looking at the choir and trying to sing with them.  Later, the family sang together as a gospel trio. In Memphis, Presley as a young teenager frequently attended all-night gospel singings at the Ellis Auditorium, where the likes of The Statesmen Quartet led the music in a style.

The Gospel according to Tim Tebow

photo excerpt from google images credits to http://news.puggal.com/tim-tebow-reads-ephesians-28-10-16386/

Ephesians 2:8-10 is the Biblical passage in Tim Tebows face today underneath his eyes.   It’s a Bible verse that separate Christianity from most religion.  I do not know of Tim’s motive but one thing I am sure… Jesus is preached where no Pastor or Evangelist have gone through.  It is not just a creativity but act of true bravery.  I can compare his to a classic Hollywood Movie “Quo Vadis.”

To Tim, please continue what you are doing as you are living what Ephesians 2:8-10 is saying.  You won’t believe how many are bless and encourage, and perhaphs are save because of what have done.

Ephesians 2:8-10 reads as follows:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
